Diet plays an important role in your overall health and wellbeing. A good and balanced diet habit improves the quality of life while poor diet may lead to health problems. Dietetics are concerned with food management; while Nutritionist promotes health. Due to the changing food habits of most of the urban population, the demand for nutritionists and dieticians is increasing rapidly. They suggest good food habits considering various aspects of an individual such as age, work routine, and sickness, etc. They also guide their clients on how to maintain the required nutrition value in food. To start a career in this field the minimum requirement is a graduate/post-graduate degree in Home Science/Dietetics and Nutrition/Food Science/Technology. Candidates desiring to seek admission into Bachelor courses in all these subjects should have passed 10+2 with science subjects. The duration of the Bachelor's course is generally for 3 years. For post-graduate courses in Home Science/Dietetics and Nutrition/Food Technology, graduation in relevant subjects is a must. The duration of postgraduate courses are of two years. Besides, there is one year Post Graduate Diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition (DDPHN). After doing Post graduation Programme, one can also go in for Ph.D and do research in Food and Nutrition. Along with the required educational qualification one must have good communication skills to interact with people, individually and in groups; writing skills to produce reports, documentation, leaflets, etc.; Nutritionists and dieticians can work with government hospitals, government health departments, schools, colleges, factories and office cafeterias for planning nutritional regiment. They also can opt for a research career mainly in universities, public or private sector research institutes. Besides all these they can also work as a private consultant or private practitioner. It’s a profession that gives you an opportunity to make a difference in your overall health and well being. So eat healthy and stay healthy.
