Dealing with Internet Addiction

Today the internet has become a part and parcel of our lives, hence getting used to it is inevitable, but getting addicted to it, is something that is going to be troublesome and harmful. Whether it is online study, tutoring, games, entertainment, movies or even shopping for that matter, we are glued to use the internet but excess use starts troubling your daily work or studies or in your concentration. Then definitely, there is an issue and you need to identify that probably you are getting addicted to the internet.

When you are using the internet a certain feel-good chemical like Dopamine is released. This makes the brain feel happy when interacting virtually and when you don’t get it there is a little bit of irritation, mood swings that come into being; because no Dopamine is produced. This can cause a lot of problems. This can affect your relationships; affect your performance, whether you are a student or working professionals, making you unhappy and isolated. If you find yourself using the internet for a long period then you intend to or try to avoid social interaction or you are thinking of what’s happening online, then definitely, internet addiction is getting into your system. It is said that internet addiction is related to emotional vacuum, probably related to depression or anxiety. So you need to identify it if it is one of the reasons. Reasons can be anything but you need to work on certain areas and you can follow certain tips that can help you overcome internet addiction. Being in the world of technology there is a world outside the virtual world and hence quitting this addiction is essential.
Here are a few tips that you can identify or probably pick up from, to internet addiction. Find alternate ways to vent out the emotions. Try to make friends face to face and not virtually. Try and stay close to your family and friend, because finally, the strength comes from family and friends, love and care. Make a routine for yourself and follow a time table. Try to use external stoppers, which mean you may ask someone to stop or interrupt you if they find you using the internet for a long time or certain alarm to stop you from excess use of the internet.

Try curbing the significant time used on the internet, social media, instant messaging, gaming, shopping, etc. by setting time limits or deadlines while using it. Once used to the basic deadlines gradually increase the timeline. Use index card or sticky cards in your room, laptop or mobiles, to give you visual reminders of not using the internet for a long time instead go to meet a friend, read a book or just relax. This will give you a visual and external help to stop your internet addiction. In case nothing of the above works, don’t shy away from seeking professional help. Quitting the internet can be difficult, but it is not impossible. If you know that technology is just an aid to make your life easier, then you will understand, we need not get attached to this technology. Make technology work for you and not vice versa.
