Support services available in universities abroad

In this episode Ms. Kunjal Sakhrani speaks about the various support services available in universities abroad. Generally students as well as parents are worried about the support required by students while studying in various universities abroad. Institutions abroad tend to offer good facilities to international students. Most universities have put support systems in place that try to make the entire experience simple and trouble-free, right from application submission to arrival and settling down. Many universities provide a ‘welcome pack’ to all their new students. These are generally sent before the students arrive at the university. The pack usually contains information on how to prepare for your stay and what to expect when you arrive in the university.

It will include information on the university & the facilities available, and also advice on tuition fee payments, housing options, health insurance arrangements, visa requirements, items you should carry with you, etc. A number of universities now also have student mentors, where current students communicate with the new students to guide them about the university and how to go about things before and after arrival. Once you arrive at the university, you will be invited to attend an orientation program. Make sure that you attend it as you will get a lot of useful, practical information and will also get a chance to meet new fellow students. Orientation programs can last anywhere between 4 and 6 days. Usually universities have a Health/Medical Centre within the campus where a team of general practitioners and nurses provide treatment to students.

International students are also provided on-campus accommodation.
These are well equipped, comfortable and secure. Guest accommodations are also provided by the universities for any visitors that students might have. The campus accommodations also have amenities like washing machines, a microwave, a dishwasher, etc to make life easy. Student services are not always about solving problems. They also try to ensure that students have a good time while at the university. Events like film screenings, visit to local tourist attractions, inter-cultural evenings, etc are organized not just for entertainment, but also to help develop new connections. Student support systems are there to make life easier for you. Being aware that there are programs, activities and people to help will make you feel secure and make the most out of your college experience.
